In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s daily life is thrown into disarray when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate Anu tries in vain to find a place in the city where she can be intimate… Read all. The first Indian film in 30 years to be screened in competition at Cannes. Prabha and Anu are roommates who have moved to Mumbai to work as nurses. City life is supposed to offer more opportunities and freedom, but it seems that the rigid old traditions continue to keep them trapped and suffering: Prabha has lived depressed and half-frozen for over a year, waiting for a call from her husband who does not exist; Anu has to see her decent boyfriend in secret because he is a Muslim and because, according to tradition, it is the parents who choose the husband. We see both the urban sprawl and the coastal landscape through the eyes of these miserable but virtuous women, whose noise has been muffled and replaced by sounds of beautiful music. We see and feel the longing for love in their eyes and hope for the change, for the transformation, for the light shining on their future. Very subtle, profound, tender and inspiring.
