to Once Upon a Time
Story
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. When the news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when his parents travel to New York to have the marriage annulled. Mikey Madison reflects on the roles that shaped her path to Anora from Better Things.

At a Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said director Sean Baker and his producer wife Samantha Quan would play different sex positions to show the actors what he wanted them to do.. Link from Close-Pup: Anora (2024). The composition is tempting.
Then the story hooks us
Mikey Madison plays the title role, a New York City belly dancer. She marries unwisely (the immature son of a Russian oligarch) and then finds herself in a terrible traffic jam. There is a standout performance from Madison, but all the performances are good.
The conclusion is not a disappointment
The abundance of nudity and sex is unfashionable for a mainstream picture, but both this and the increasingly comic drama have a rare vitality. Also impressive places – Las Vegas and Coney Island in the off-season are skillfully captured. It’s well over two hours, it’s too long, but it almost holds our attention because we have no idea how it’s going to end.
It’s the dynamic stuff of a fearless director
