Quite the opposite
Main Title (uncredited)Written and performed by Ramin Djawadi. It’s been over time in a gradual abundance of watching “Game of Thrones” since the first episode (gradually due to the fact that I’m so busy), I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it from friends, family, and IMDb reviewers. Plus, with such a talented cast and a brilliant book series, how could it go wrong? The good news is that ‘Game of Thrones’ didn’t do it wrong. Not only is it a rare television show that does its original source material justice and treats it with respect, but it is, on its own merits, one of the best, most engaging, and most compelling shows of recent years.
Visually, ‘Game of Thrones’ looks stunning
A television show so brilliant that we have to check if it was made for television when everything is done to such a high standard that it puts many movies made today to shame. This is one of the strongest examples of an acclaimed show that deserves every ounce of the praise it has garnered. The scenery is spectacular throughout, the sets are extremely atmospheric and beautiful to the eye, with a truly meticulous eye for detail, and the costumes fit the characters to a tee. Then there are the special effects which are some of the best on any television program and are not overused or abused, the scope, detail and the way they have character and soul are better than those in many of the big budget blockbusters. So is the cinematography and editing which are also of cinematic quality.
Again, worthy of a big budget fantasy/action/drama film
One cannot talk about “Game of Thrones”; without mentioning the thematically, orchestral and atmospherically layered musical score and the unforgettable main theme. It is hard not to be amazed by the quality of the writing, exceptional is not a strong enough adjective to describe how good the writing is. It always has a natural flow, is layered and thought provoking and demonstrates a wide range of emotions such as suspenseful tension, moving pathos and witty humor. The stories are so beautifully paced, structured with such nuance and attention to coherence, a high emotional level, and they touch on complex and sensitive themes with intelligence and tact. Whenever there’s a play or a more action-oriented scene there’s always a reason, never there for the sake of it.
The characters are also a big part of the appeal
Not only are the sets done with epic scale, superb staging, emotion and dramatic tension, but underneath all the grandeur and brilliant attention to detail there’s a lot of heart and a multi-layered one. They’re not too long, nor are there any elements out of place. ‘Game of Thrones’ has characters that are so well-developed and as close to real life as you can get, despite being in a fantasy world. These characters aren’t archetypes of heroes and villains (Joffrey is the only one close to that, but the difference is that he’s an extremely interesting, well-developed one who ranks well above a hundred percent on the threat level scale), they have a lot more going for them and have strengths and flaws. The decisions are logical and it doesn’t make a character any less happy when a decision isn’t the right one, because mistakes are acknowledged and learned from.
