Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. After years of not having contact, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. When Pedro Almodóvar sent the script to Tilda Swinton, he asked her who should play Ingrid. They both had Julianne Moore in mind. Featured in The 7PM Project: Episode of September 8, 2024 (2024). It is hard to imagine that there has been a more elegant, sophisticated and stylish film about death before this latest achievement by Pedro Almodóvar. The set design, choice of colors and costumes make it an aesthetic pleasure almost too extravagant to watch. My problem is that the film never finds the depth that should be required when dealing with such a serious and profound subject. Should we have the freedom and autonomy to decide for ourselves whether or not the time has come to end our lives? Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore do their best to focus on this question, portraying a close friendship facing its final and most complex challenge of all. But the long dialogues felt stilted and too formal for my taste. I was surprised by the film’s visual richness, but it never moved me emotionally, something I would have expected from a great director like Almodóvar.
