Story
Ernest Cole was one of the first independent black photographers in South Africa, whose first photographs, shocking when first published, revealed to the world the lives of black people during apartheid. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and lived in exile in the United States, where he photographed extensively in New York as well as in the United States.
