Story
After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years after being wrongly accused of treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to exact revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee sing and play the guitar, it’s very obvious that she’s not even touching the strings half the time.

So I actually read the book, the real book(s), not the watered-down version you find in the bookstore. This story is gripping, character-driven, intricate, and the details tell how it all fits together.
This, while a totally okay movie, has none of that beyond the outlines of the main plot lines
There’s no good beyond the bad, no ambivalent ending, and no basis for it all, the relationship between the abbot and Edmond, who essentially becomes a son. It’s also missing the backstory from the escape to Edmond’s arrival in Paris that makes the whole revenge plot believable in the first place.
I also can’t help but miss old Mr
Villefort, whose story, though peripheral, is so central to who Edmond really is as a person. So, if you want to see a French drama set during the 19th century that’s pretty okay with some good actors, go for it.
Find an Antiquarian because that’s the only place you’ll find this masterpiece
