Story
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as they have a long-standing rivalry that comes to a head. The same filming location was also used to portray Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark.
In many ways, his work has been more like Restoration Comedy than Carry On, with characters having more development and more inner lives than you would expect
In the 1990s, there was a terrible version of Riders by Jilly Cooper, since then TV has shied away from its bonkbusters; critics thought Jilly Cooper’s novels were dated and silly. This is far from the truth, Cooper satirises the upper middle classes of the Cotswolds with an iron wit and has always understood comedy, character and entertaining plots.
The changes are small and actually open up the period and the politics more
Now from Disney comes RIVALS boasting a stellar cast and the good news is that it is a great watch, yes, it is full of naughty moments and boobs and ass, even the occasional Willy. The triumph of it, though, is that it has the budget and the time to do justice to the feel and spirit of the original book.
He does a truly honourable job
Bella Maclean is brilliant in the central role of Tagie and Alex Hassel does a great job as Rupert, a role that is impossible to cast because no one in the story can be the character Cooper created – part villain, part Adonis, part whiny child. The real star of this, though, is the ensemble of great character actors Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Katherine Parkinson, all of whom give the best performances of their careers.
I really enjoyed it
The 80s soundtrack is on point and makes Rivals a real triumph for Disney. It’s fun, it’s frothy, but there’s a deeper undertow that elevates it above a landmark film and offers hope that we’ll see a lot more of this team and this universe in the future.
